Founded by internationally renowned pianist Robert Koenig, the Bellosguardo International Piano Competition grew from a simple belief: extraordinary young musicians deserve opportunities not only to demonstrate what they can do, but to discover more fully who they are as artists.
The inaugural Competition will take place August 12-20, 2028, in Santa Barbara, California, welcoming pianists ages 18 to 30 from around the world. At its heart is a commitment to artistic excellence, but also to the joy, curiosity, mentorship, and human connection that sustains a life in music. Bellosguardo seeks to create an experience in which young pianists are challenged to reach their highest level while being encouraged to bring their own voice, ideas, and individuality to the stage.
Following an international preliminary video round, twenty pianists will be invited to Santa Barbara for the Quarterfinal and Seifinal Rounds at the historic Bellosguardo extate, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Three finalists will advance to the Granada Theatre to perform with the Santa Barbara Symphony.
Competitors will be heard by distinguished international juries and will compete for significant prizes and opportunities, including a $50,000 First Prize Award. The Quarterfinal Round will also feature the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by acclaimed composer Reena Esmail, commissioned by the Bellosguardo International Piano Competition through the generous support of Mashey Bernstein, Commission Sponsor.

Robert Koenig is widely considered one of today’s foremost collaborative pianists and brings a wealth of knowledge and esteemed cache to prestigious concert venues throughout the world. With a noted career that spans more than three decades,
Robert regularly performs at such venues as New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, Washington’s Kennedy Center, Seattle’s Benaroya Hall, Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, and Amsterdam’s Het Concertgebouw. He has collaborated with many of this generation’s most renowned musicians, including Joshua Bell, Augustin Hadelich, Sarah Chang, Hilary Hahn, Roberto Diaz, Zuill Bailey, and Sara Sant’Ambrogio. Of significance is Robert’s frequent partnership with legendary late violinist Aaron Rosand, as well as his 30-year collaboration with renowned violinist Elmar Oliveira.
Robert currently serves as Professor and Head of Collaborative Piano at the University of California Santa Barbara. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Bellosguardo International Piano Competition, with the inaugural competition to take place in Santa Barbara, CA in 2028.

Jill Arbetter brings more than two decades of experience as an arts executive, artist manager, and professional violinist to the Bellosguardo International Piano Competition.
Jill served as Executive Director of the Elevar Foundation, home to the Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition, where she helped advance the organization’s work supporting emerging artists through competitions, festivals, professional development, and community programs.
Earlier in her career, Jill performed with leading orchestras throughout Europe and the United States and founded Arbetter Artists, representing distinguished conductors and instrumentalists and developing international tours and recording projects. She has also served as Artistic Consultant for the Santa Barbara Symphony and Competition Manager for the Palm Springs and Ke‘alohi International Piano Competitions.
Jill holds degrees in violin performance from New England Conservatory and Mannes College of Music and was a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center.

Raechel Alexander is a performing arts communications specialist with more than 25 years of experience working with leading artists and cultural institutions. She has held senior communications positions at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Carnegie Hall, and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, where her work spanned media relations, institutional communications, artistic initiatives, education programs, and major organizational launches.
Today, as an independent consultant, Raechel works with artists and performing arts organizations on communications strategy, media relations, digital content, institutional positioning, and audience engagement. Her approach is grounded in creating thoughtful, authentic communications that reflect the individuality of each artist and organization.
A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, Raechel holds a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance and pursued graduate studies at Mannes College of Music in New York.
