The Bellosguardo International Piano Competition was founded with the belief that extraordinary talent deserves meaningful opportunity. By bringing together young pianists, distinguished artists, educators, and audiences, the competition seeks to foster artistic growth while creating connections that extend beyond the competition stage.
Set against the backdrop of Santa Barbara and the historic Bellosguardo Estate, the competition celebrates both artistic excellence and the enduring importance of supporting the next generation of musicians.

Who is Eligible?
The Bellosguardo International Piano Competition welcomes pianists of all nationalities who are between the ages of 18 and 30 at the time of the competition.
We invite emerging artists from around the world to apply and share their artistry with an international panel of respected musicians and educators.
Additional application requirements and policies will be announced in advance of the inaugural competition.
Rounds & Rep
The competition begins with a preliminary video round reviewed by an international panel of distinguished pianists.
Up to twenty competitors will advance to Santa Barbara for the Quarterfinal Round starting on August 13, 2028 at the Bellosguardo Foundation Estate.
Eight pianists will continue to the Semifinal Round, also held at Bellosguardo.
Three finalists will perform one complete concerto with the Santa Barbara Symphony in the Final Round at the historic Granada Theatre.
The Quarterfinal Round will include a newly commissioned work by Reena Esmail provided to those that advance prior to the round. Complete repertoire requirements will be announced at a later date.
Prizes
The Bellosguardo International Piano Competition is committed to providing meaningful support for emerging artists.
The Gold Medal Award includes a cash prize of $50,000, placing Bellosguardo among the most substantial piano competition awards in the United States.
Additional prizes, performance opportunities, and professional development initiatives will be announced as the competition approaches.
Jury
The Bellosguardo International Piano Competition will be judged by internationally respected pianists, educators, and artistic leaders.
A distinguished panel of three preliminary-round judges will review video applications, while a separate jury of seven renowned musicians will adjudicate the live competition rounds in Santa Barbara.
Jury members will be announced at a later date.

As we envisioned the Bellosguardo International Piano Competition, those experiences became our guide. We wanted to create an environment that celebrates exceptional artistry while recognizing the person behind every performance. One that challenges pianists to achieve their highest level, supports them with respect and humanity, and reminds us all why we fell in love with music in the first place.

Reena Esmail

At the Bellosguardo International Piano Competition, we believe that honoring the piano's rich legacy also means championing the voices shaping its future. Through the commissioning of new works, the Competition is committed to supporting today's most compelling composers and enriching the repertoire for generations to come.
For its inaugural Competition, Bellosguardo is honored to commission is honored to collaborate with acclaimed composer Reena Esmail, who will create a new work for solo piano to be performed during the Quarterfinal Round. This project is made possible through the generous support of Mashey Bernstein, Commission Sponsor.
Reena Esmail’s music weaves together the traditions of Hindustani and Western classical music. Her extensive catalog of orchestral, choral and chamber music is performed regularly across the United States and around the world. Her life and work was profiled on PBS’s Great Performances: Now Hear This, and recordings of her music have appeared on multiple GRAMMY-nominated albums. Esmail holds degrees from The Juilliard School and the Yale School of Music, as well as a Fulbright-Nehru scholarship to India. She has served as Composer-in-Residence with Seattle Symphony (2021-22), Los Angeles Master Chorale (2020-25), Spoleto (2024), Tanglewood (2023), and Marlboro Music Festival (2025). She currently resides in her hometown of Los Angeles, California.
